The world's oldest international sports body was established in 1881 and is called the International Gymnastics Federation. The history of gymnastics began in ancient times when philosophers promoted it as a way of mixing mental and physical activity.
With the start of more events during the 19th century, especially the gymnastics competition at the newly resurrected Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, this sport gained popularity.
Gymnastic Rules
In artistic gymnastics, there are two types of competitions: individual and team. Both of these categories require different equipment according to the athlete’s gender and some other factors. Every piece of equipment needs specific types of skills.
Men compete in events such as rings, jumping, pommel horse, parallel bars, horizontal bars, and floor exercises. Women's competitions include balance beams, vaulting, floor exercise and uneven bars. Strength, speed, balance, and perfection are needed for each stage of gymnastics competition.
Gymnastic exercises at the Games were scored a maximum of 10 points until 2004. However, starting in 2005, the scoring system was modified to combine an E score for execution and a D mark for the difficulty of the exercise to allow for more diversity in competitors' performances. The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will feature gymnastics from July 27 to August 5.

Paris Olympics Gymnastic Venue
Bercy Arena, a sizable sports arena that used to be France's top concert venue and hosted a number of foreign performers, will host the gymnastics competition. The arena was designed by architects Pierre Parat and Michel Andrault and was constructed in 1984.
It is situated in the 12th district of Paris. Bercy Arena is famous for its unique pyramidal design and grass-covered sloped sides. The arena got major renovations in 2014 and 2015 in order to update its technology infrastructure.
These improvements enabled Bercy Arena to hold a variety of sports events, including motocross, skiing, ice hockey, handball, judo, and horse competitions. During the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the arena will host two main sports: gymnastics and basketball.

Scoring in Olympic Rhythmic Gymnastics
Gymnasts' 75- to 90-second performances are evaluated based on their technical ability, artistic flair, and equipment performance. The total score of a gymnast in the qualification round of the individual all-around is calculated by adding the scores from each equipment. The gymnast with the greatest total score wins gold when the scores are rearranged for the final.
Groups receive ratings in the group event according to their total scores. Scores change in the final, with the highest total score taking first place. Judges award a maximum of 10 points for each of the two categories: difficulty and execution.
Scoring in Athletic Gymnastics in Paris 2024
The scores of athletes get deducted for a variety of mistakes, including dropping the equipment or going out of the boundaries, which will reduce their scores. Gymnastics competitions consist of both team and individual competitions. Every one of these events has a unique scoring system.
Gymnasts are graded on their performance of abilities and techniques as well as the difficulty and complexity of their routines for individual competitions. The total score of a gymnast is the product of their performance and difficulty scores.
The Value of Difficulty
The difficulty score is calculated by adding together all of the points a player receives for the most challenging tasks. A two-person panel of judges sets a difficulty score. Every talent has a fixed difficulty value that can be found in the Code of Points, and it is only counted once during the procedure.
When it comes to floor exercises, Group A is the easiest group to master, and Group J is the hardest.
Below is a summary of the points that the different skill categories draw.
- Group A skills - 0.1 points
- Group B skills - 0.2 points
- Group C skills - 0.3 points
- Group D skills - 0.4 points
- Group E skills - 0.5 points
- Group F skills - 0.6 points
- Group G skills - 0.7 points
- Group H skills - 0.8 points
- Group I skills - 0.9 points
- Group J skills - 1.0 points
Eight of their top rating scores determine the section's final score.
The Value of the Connection
When a gymnast performs a series of abilities successfully, they receive a connection point. About 0.1 to 0.2 points have been set for each skill for both male and female gymnasts.
When an athlete completes the necessary tasks on a certain piece of equipment, they score these points. Each of the four composition criteria is worth 0.5 points. 2.5 points is the maximum possible score according to with composition rules.
Score for Execution
Points are given for skills and technique perfect performance in execution scores. For most events, the initial value of the execution points is 10.0 points. When a gymnast makes mistakes or faults in the way they execute a technique, they lose points during their routine.
The overall score is calculated after reducing the points for their mistakes.
