Women's Football Teams in the Olympics
8 teams competed in the women's division at first. By 2000, it had grown to 10 teams, and at the Beijing Games in 2008, there were 12. There is a coming expectation that the competition will grow over time to include 16 teams due to the global expansion of women's football.
For now, 12 countries have made it to the Paris 2024 women's soccer Olympics tournament.
- Group A: Canada, Colombia, France, New Zealand
- Group B: Australia, Germany, United States, Zambia

Women's Football Format in the Olympics
The 12 women's teams are divided into 3 groups of 4 teams each. The best third-place teams and the top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals.
A total of 31 members of national teams from the 47 AFC member associations qualified for the qualification round.
The gold medal France matches put the semifinal winners against each other, while the bronze medal match comprises the losers. On a grass surface, two teams of eleven players compete in a ninety-minute match divided into two parts of 45 minutes each.
In contrast to the group stage, in the knockout stage, if a match is tied at the end of regulation play, extra time is played, and, if needed, a penalty shoot-out is used to decide the winner.

How do the Olympic football group stage and knockout stages operate?
With three points awarded for a win, one point for a draw, and zero for a defeat, each team plays each other in its group once. Teams are ranked according to how many points they have earned overall in the group; goal differential is used to break ties.
Quarterfinal round is when the knockout portion of both events starts. Every knockout stage meeting lasts for one ninety-minute game. If there's a draw after ninety minutes, there's a 30-minute extra period and, if needed, a penalty shootout.
In the semifinals, the teams that won their quarterfinal matches square off. The winners of the semifinals go to the Gold Medal Match, while the losers of the semifinals compete in the Bronze Medal Match.
