One of the first sports that is still played today is archery, which has a strong connection to the rise of human society. Archery has been used for both hunting and warfare throughout history, the earliest indications of its use date back to South African locations like Sibudu Cave, where arrowheads from about 64,000 years ago have been discovered.

During the Zhou dynasty, the People's Republic of China hosted the earliest archery competitions ever recorded. As the sport became more popular around the world, the International Archery Federation was founded in 1931.
