Badminton is a racket sport in which two opposite players or two opposing teams compete on both sides of a rectangular court separated by a net.

The badminton competitions at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are expected to take place at Porte de la Chapelle Arena from July 27 to August 5, 2024. The number of badminton players competing at these Games is exactly the same as in previous editions.

Ten days of competition will feature competition in the men's and women's singles and men's and women's doubles. 172 players, with an equal distribution of men and women, will play across five medal events.

History of Badminton

The exact origin of badminton is not known, but it is said that badminton got its name Badminton House because it was originally played at the Duke of Beaufort's house in the early 1860s. The game made its way to India, where it gained popularity as a sport in military bases.

From there, it progressively made its way across the British colonies, Europe, and East Asia. Nowadays, badminton is a popular sport throughout the world that appeals to players of all skill levels and ages.

Badminton debuted as an Olympic sport in the 1972 Munich Olympics. Four years later, in 1992, badminton was officially added to the Olympic program in Barcelona. It was added to the Olympics with four medal categories: men's and women's singles and men's and women's doubles.

Badminton was also included as an exhibition sport in the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988. In 1996, mixed doubles was introduced as a new event for the Games in Atlanta. Asian athletes have ruled the Olympics, winning 106 out of 121 badminton medals in the sport's history.

Rules of Olympics Badminton

Badminton is an indoor racket sport in which two opposed individuals, or two pairs, compete on opposite sides of a court divided by a net. During a match, players utilize a shuttlecock in an attempt to land it on their opponent's court.

A shuttlecock is hit over a net by players using rackets; if the shuttlecock travels too far, it is an out. It is frequently enjoyed in a variety of environments, from casual backyard games to competitive professional competitions.

The object of the game is to hit the shuttlecock over the net so that it cannot be successfully hit back by the opposing player or couple before it hits the floor. The player or team receives one point each time this is completed.

In the game, every serve is either won or lost. To win the match, players must win two 21-point games.

Badminton Olympics Format

The format for competition matches is best-of-three for both individual and team events. Under the Olympic tournament format, a single loss means elimination from the competition. The bronze-medal final will be played between the two losers of the semifinal.
