James Naismith, a Canadian physical education teacher, invented basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891 as a less injury-prone sport than football. During the winter, Naismith, a 31-year-old graduate student, invented indoor sports to keep athletes inside.
The game gained popularity quite fast when it developed, initially in America and afterwards in other countries during the 20th century. The professional game of basketball evolved when basketball gained popularity in American colleges.
By the end of the 20th century, the American National Basketball Association (NBA), established in 1946, had grown to be a multibillion-dollar industry and basketball was deeply rooted in American culture.

Olympic Basketball
James Naismith created basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891. The new game gained popularity as an indoor sport across the United States in a matter of decades. As the sport gained popularity abroad, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) was established in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1932.
The 1976 Summer Olympics included the first women's competition. The Soviet Union won as the first champion after winning five games in a row. The next two competitions used a six-team round-robin format. In 1980, the Soviet Union won its championship against the United States-led boycott, and in 1984, the United States won over South Korea in the same boycott.
U.S. Professional Basketball
The states of New England and the Middle Atlantic saw the most growth in the professional game initially. The first great professional teams were Trenton (New Jersey) and the New York Wanderers. Then came the Buffalo (New York) Germans, who began as 14-year-old Buffalo YMCA members in 1895 and played for 44 years, winning 792 of 878 games, with limited new members.
Edward and Lew Wachter were among a group of basketball stylists who never got the credit they deserved. They championed the rule allowing each player to shoot his free throw after being fouled and developed the bounce pass and long pass as attacking weapons.
